Shipibo Manta with Koros Kené pattern – symbol of protection in traditional embroidery art
This hand-embroidered Shipibo Manta (Tela) features the powerful Koros Kené – a repeated cross pattern that represents protection, energetic centering, and spiritual alignment in the Shipibo cosmovision. This Manta was made by a Shipibo family in Pucallpa and is unique in bright pink, turquoise and orange tones.
Meaning of Koros Kené
“Koros” means cross in the Shipibo language. This pattern is traditionally worn by women to protect themselves from negative male energies and harmful influences. It boosts self-confidence, especially in new social situations or when traveling.
Koros Kené also acts as a symbol of protection against evil spirits and supports the inner center.
In a ritual context, the pattern was also painted with Huito plant paint on the bodies of the deceased to give them protection on their way to the spiritual world.
The clear geometry of the cross symbolizes the connection between the worlds, the four cardinal directions and the inner orientation in the healing process.
