Shipibo Manta with Koros Kené Pattern – Sacred Cross Symbol of Balance and Protection

This traditional Shipibo Manta (Tela) was carefully handcrafted by a Shipibo family from Pucallpa in the Peruvian Amazon. The luminous pattern is called Koros Kené – “Koros” means cross. This powerful symbol is deeply rooted in the spiritual world of the Shipibo-Konibo.

Spiritual significance of Koros Kené

The Koros Kené is especially worn by women who want to protect themselves from negative male energies and harmful influences. It is traditionally sewn into skirts and worn on social occasions to strengthen oneself energetically and to confidently connect with new surroundings or new people. It offers protection from evil spirits and promotes inner peace, clarity and self-confidence.

This kené pattern is also great for travel, as it provides protection and stability in unfamiliar situations. In a ritual context, it was also applied to the bodies of the deceased with Huito plant paint to accompany and protect them on their way to the afterlife.

In the Cosmovision of the Shipibo-Konibo, the cross pattern stands for the connection of heaven and earth, for orientation, energetic alignment and access to the center of one’s own being.
