Muña oil – The essence of Peruvian mint (Minthostachys mollis)

Origin and extraction

Muña oil comes from wild-growing mint bushes that thrive at an altitude of 2,500-3,500 m in the Peruvian Andes. Immediately after harvesting, the leaves are gently steam distilled. The result is an unadulterated, 100% natural essential oil with no additives.

Fragrance profile

A fresh, pepperminty-herbaceous fragrance with a resinous-spicy base is reminiscent of clear mountain air and invigorates the mind and senses after just a few drops.

Main components and effect

Pulegone, menthone and isomenthone are the dominant monoterpenes. They have an antimicrobial, expectorant, digestive and slightly antispasmodic effect. Muña traditionally helps with respiratory complaints and supports healthy digestion.

Traditional applications in the Andes

Indigenous communities use muña tea to treat altitude sickness and nausea, inhale the steam for bronchitis and rub crushed leaves on tense muscles, insect bites or minor injuries. Dried twigs are used as a natural insect repellent in living spaces and storerooms.

Modern aromatherapy

In a diffuser, three to five drops are enough to clear rooms and promote concentration. In a base oil (max. 2 %), it is suitable as a cooling sports massage or chest-relieving rub. A single drop can even give a refreshing boost to mixed mouthwashes.

Packaging & shelf life

The 10 ml Miron violet glass filters out harmful light and preserves the fragrance and active ingredients for much longer than conventional bottles. Stored in a cool, dark and well-sealed place, the oil stays fresh for up to 24 months.

Safety note

Due to the natural pulegon content, only use a low dose externally or for room fragrancing. Pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under the age of six should refrain from direct use. Internal use only after expert advice.
