Guayusa Mint & Lemon is a traditional, caffeinated organic infusion of Ilex guayusa from the Ecuadorian Amazon. Refined with organic mint, organic lemongrass and organic lemon peel , the result is a mild, fresh tea with a clear citrus note, ideal as a natural alternative to coffee or mate.

Ilex guayusa what is it

Ilex guayusa is a species of holly and botanically related to yerba mate Ilex paraguariensis . The plant grows in the humid rainforest regions of Ecuador. For generations, the evergreen leaves have been harvested, gently dried and used as an infusion.

Compared to mate, guayusa is particularly mild, hardly bitter and very balanced in taste. Guayusa naturally contains caffeine and is therefore often drunk in the morning or in focus phases.

Tradition in Ecuador

Guayusa is deeply rooted in the way of life of indigenous communities of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Especially among Kichwa communities in the province of Napo, the guayusa infusion is still part of the early morning hours. Traditionally, guayusa is drunk in the family or village community circle and accompanies conversations, the sharing of dreams and the orientation towards the day.

Guayusa has also been known for a long time among peoples of the Jivaro cultural area such as the Shuar and was valued in times of increased physical or mental activity.

Preparation

• Classic infusion 2 to 4 teaspoons to 200 to 300 ml of hot water, not bubbling boiling, steep for 4 to 6 minutes
• Pour 2 to 4 tablespoons into approx. 500 ml of water, bring to the boil briefly or pour over very hot, leave to infuse for 3 to 5 minutes
• Enjoy warm or cold, also suitable as iced tea
