The chakapa, also known as the “leaf rattle”, is an ancient ritual tool made and used by indigenous communities in the Peruvian rainforest. It is made from the dried leaves of the pariana plant, which are carefully bundled and fitted with an elaborately decorated handle.
Cultural significance
In the ceremonies of the Shipibo-Conibo and other Amazonian peoples, the chakapa is used to create healing sounds. The gentle noise when shaken has a calming, clarifying effect and supports the energetic cleansing of the ceremony room and the participants.
Manufacture
Each chakapa is handmade from fresh leaves that are gently dried in the sun. The handle is decorated with traditional patterns that are often inspired by visions of shamanic work.
Application & care
When first received, the Chakapa can be lightly sprayed with water and gently shaped to develop its volume. After use, it is recommended to store it in a dry place away from direct sunlight. For energetic cleansing, it can occasionally be drawn through the smoke of Palo Santo or Copal.
