Description

Q’ero Four Elements Mestana Altar – Tawa Cloth

This handwoven Mestana altar cloth comes from the Q’ero people of the Cusco region in Peru and carries the powerful symbolism of the Tawa – the four elements of air, fire, water, and earth. Each piece is crafted in traditional Andean weaving and is a unique work that reflects the deep connection between humans, nature, and the cosmos.

Symbolism & Andean Cosmology

  • North – White: purity, clarity, spiritual guidance; the snow of the Andean peaks.
  • South – Brown: Earth, body, fertility; the nourishing basis for growth.
  • East – Black: New beginnings, renewal, the night as a mystery before sunrise.
  • West – Grey/Natural: Transition, Twilight and Water; Change between day and night.

Application

The Mestana is suitable as an altar cloth, underlay for your mesa (holy bundles), for meditation & rituals or as a special décor in sacred rooms. It supports a grounded, clear atmosphere and invites conscious alignment.

Production & Origin

Crafted by Q’ero craftsmen in elaborate handicraft using ancestral techniques. Slight irregularities in fabric, colour and shape are signs of genuine craftsmanship and give each shawl its individual character.

Design & Workmanship

  • Four-panel layout in earthy natural tones (black, brown, natural/beige, off-white) with corner tassels.
  • Traditional pattern inspired by the tawa principle of the four elements and cardinal directions.
  • Handwoven from natural, robust fibres; pleasantly grippy feel.
  • Each piece is unique – deviations are intentional and part of the aesthetic.

Care

  • Gentle cleaning: air out regularly, wash carefully by hand in cold water if necessary.
  • No tumble dryer; Dry flat, avoid direct sun.
  • Do not bleach; Iron over it at a low temperature and with a cloth.

Fair & Direct

With your purchase, you support the Q’ero community and contribute to the preservation of their culture and craftsmanship.

Hints

  • Handmade: slight variations in size and colour possible.
