Origin and botany

Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens) is a tree in the balsam tree family (Burseraceae) and is mainly native to South America. It is particularly native to Peru, Ecuador and other parts of the Amazon region. The tree grows in dry tropical forests and can reach a height of up to 15 meters. Its bark is grey-brown, the wood is golden in colour with a characteristic vein and an intense, aromatic fragrance.

History and tradition

Palo Santo, the mystical incense, is highly prized by the shamans of Peru and occupies a special place in spiritual healing and purification. Originating from the sacred areas of South America, specifically Peru and Ecuador, Palo Santo means "sacred wood" in Spanish and has been revered for centuries for its powerful energetic properties and profound healing abilities.

Shamans, the spiritual leaders and healers of indigenous communities, have long recognized the power of Palo Santo in their sacred rituals and ceremonies. They use it as a sacred tool for purification, protection and spiritual transformation. Palo Santo serves to purify the energy of individuals, spaces and objects, dispel negative energies and restore balance and harmony to body, mind and spirit.

The shamans of Peru have deep respect for Palo Santo and consider it a gift from the earth as well as a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds. In their ceremonial practices, palo santo is burned as incense, with its aromatic smoke said to help carry prayers and intentions to heaven and facilitate communication with the divine and ancestral spirits.

The sweet, woody scent of Palo Santo is said to uplift the spirit, calm the mind and induce a sense of peace and serenity. Its smoke is considered purifying and protective, creating a sacred space that promotes healing, meditation, and spiritual insight.

Palo Santo Sticks – Incense for cleaning and protection

The most well-known form of palo santo are small wooden sticks that are used for smoking. They are ignited on one side, so they burn for a few seconds before being blown out. The rising smoke is used to energetically cleanse rooms, objects and people and create a peaceful atmosphere. The Palo Santo Sticks are particularly suitable for meditation, yoga and spiritual rituals.

Frequently Asked Questions about Palo Santo (FAQ)

What is Palo Santo (Sacred Wood)?

Palo Santo (Spanish for "sacred wood") comes from the Bursera graveolens tree, which grows in the dry forests of South America (especially Peru and Ecuador). It belongs to the same plant family as frankincense and myrrh. For centuries, it has been used by indigenous peoples and shamans for spiritual ceremonies. The smoke exudes a unique, intensely sweet and woody scent with notes of coconut, citrus and pine, which immediately creates a relaxed atmosphere.

In contrast to white sage, which often stands for a very radical cleansing, Palo Santo has a more harmonizing and "blessing" effect. Traditionally, it is used to gently dispel negative energies ("Limpieza") and at the same time attract positive energy. It is said to calm the mind, reduce stress, and raise the vibration in the room. That's why it's ideal before meditation, yoga or after a stressful day at work to get back into your own center.

There is often confusion here. There are two species of trees called "Palo Santo". The species Bulnesia sarmientoi is actually endangered. However, the palo santo that we offer in the Shaman Shop is Bursera graveolens. This tree is not under strict species protection, as long as it is managed sustainably. Our quality promise: We only sell wood from trees that have died naturally and have been lying on the forest floor for several years ("curing" process). This is the only way to create the essential oil and the typical fragrance. No living tree will be felled for our wood!

The application is simple and intuitive:

  1. Light a log on one side (preferably on a candle).

  2. Let it burn for about 30-60 seconds until you have a good glow.

  3. Blow out the flame gently. The wood now glows and emits the white, fragrant smoke.

  4. Walk around the room with it or fan the smoke over your body (aura).

  5. Place the wood in a fireproof dish (e.g., abalone shell). Special feature: Palo Santo goes off on its own. So you can use a chopstick many times.

If you want to buy authentic, ethically correct Palo Santo in Switzerland , shaman-shop.ch is the right place for you. We import directly from Peru and Ecuador and make sure that the wood comes from controlled collection (from fallen trees). In contrast to cheap imitations, which are often only perfumed, with us you get the natural, resin-rich heartwood with the full energetic power. Due to our location in Switzerland, you benefit from fast, duty-free shipping.

Similar to wine ("terroir"), the soil influences the fragrance:

  • Peru: The chopsticks are often chopped a little more angularly. The scent is usually described as spicy, more intense and very resinous .

  • Ecuador: The rods are often a little rounder. The scent is considered to be somewhat sweeter, softer and more citrusy. Both variants have the same cleansing effect – it's a matter of personal preference.

This is a sign of quality, not a mistake! Real Palo Santo contains a lot of natural resin and is a very dense wood. It is normal for the flame to go out and the wood to smoke only briefly (unlike incense sticks, which often contain burning aids). For longer incense, you may need to light the stick several times or use Palo Santo incense powder or cones, which we also offer.

Yes, absolutely! The sacred wood is very versatile. In our shop you will find different forms of processing, depending on how you want to use the energy:

  • Palo Santo Incense sticks & cones: Ideal for those who want continuous smoking . In contrast to raw wood, which often runs out, sticks (made of pressed sawdust and natural binder) burn evenly through. Perfect for longer meditations.

  • Palo Santo Spray (Aura Spray): The modern solution for "Smokeless Smudging". If you are in the office, hotel or hospital and are not allowed to make smoke, the spray is ideal. It immediately cleanses the energy field, refreshes and smells wonderful, without any fire.

  • 100% Essential Oil: The pure essence. The oil is extracted from the wood by steam distillation. You can use it in a diffuser (for home fragrance) or diluted with a carrier oil for massages to deeply relax.

  • Jewelry (malas & bracelets): Wear the protection directly on your body. Pearls made of Palo Santo wood exude a very subtle fragrance due to the body heat. They serve as a talisman or meditation chain (mala) to ground you in everyday life.

  • Kuripe & Tepi: For the rapé ceremony, we offer hand-carved blowpipes made of Palo Santo wood. Here, the cleansing energy of wood connects directly with shamanic medicine. The wood is also very robust and noble.

Safety note

As with any incense, never leave smoldering wood unattended. Use a fireproof surface. Since Palo Santo smells intense, a small amount of smoke is often enough. After smoking, ventilate well to let the "old energies" drain away.
