While some consider Awiry a type of wild tobacco, Apurinã Wiry is generally classified as tobacco-free Rapé. It grows along riverbanks and can only be harvested during certain times of the year, as the rainy season submerges its growing areas. Nowadays, some indigenous communities have begun cultivating it to improve its availability.
