Playing the Quena
Playing the Quena requires a special technique, as its mouthpiece has a beveled edge on which the airflow is refracted to create the sound. Here is a guide for the basic technique:
- Holding position: Hold the quena horizontally in front of you, with the thumb and fingers of the left hand positioned at the top (for the upper holes) and the thumb and fingers of the right hand at the bottom (for the lower holes).
- Attaching the mouthpiece: Place the upper lip against the top edge of the mouthpiece so that it presses lightly against the chin. The mouthpiece should not be held too tightly – only slightly against the lip.
- Control airflow: Direct the airflow slightly downwards, similar to playing a flute. Experiment with the angle of the airflow until you get a clear tone. The airflow should be even and controlled.
- Finger technique: Start by covering the holes to create different tones. Close all the holes for the lowest note and gradually open the holes to play higher notes. The quena is usually tuned pentatonic, so it has its own scale.
- Practice and experiment: Playing the quena takes practice to gain proper control over airflow and finger positions. Start with simple melodies to get a feel for the flute.
Tip: A mirror can help to check the correct position and airflow at the beginning. Patience and regular practice are crucial to mastering the warm and earthy sound of the Quena.
