Description

Chakapa with Shipibo pattern handle – Traditional ritual instrument from Peru

The chakapa, also known as the “leaf rattle”, is an ancient ritual tool used by the indigenous communities
of the Peruvian rainforest. It is tied from the dried leaves of the Pariana plant and
finished with an ornate handle adorned with authentic Shipibo patterns.

Cultural significance

In the ceremonies of the Shipibo-Conibo and other peoples of Amazonia, the chakapa is used to produce soft,
rhythmic sounds. The rustling of the leaves accompanies chants and rituals, creating a
special atmosphere of alignment and harmony.

Manufacture

Each chakapa is carefully handcrafted in the Amazon region of Peru. The fresh leaves of the Pariana plantare gently dried, bundled and provided with a decorated handle. The Shipibo patterns on the handle
are inspired by the visions and symbolic language of traditional plant work.

Natural Product Notice

Since the Chakapa is a purely natural product, colour nuances, leaf structure and slight
discolouration of the leaves may occur. These natural variations are created by the drying process, climate and
aging of the plant and are not a defect in quality, but an expression of the authenticity and uniqueness
of each individual Chakapa.

Application & care

  • Spray lightly with water and shape before first use
  • Store in a dry place away from direct sun after use
  • For energetic cleansing, the Chakapa can be drawn through the smoke of Palo Santo or Copal
